SecTor 2025 Recap: Strengthening Collective Defense Against Advanced Cybersecurity Threats
Following the successful conclusion of SecTor 2025 earlier this month, our team is excited to share key highlights from the event. This year, Canada's largest cybersecurity conference officially welcomed 5,350 security professionals from September 30 to October 2 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
The event, part of the Black Hat global cybersecurity events portfolio, arrived at a critical moment when organizations face increasingly sophisticated attacks across AI systems, cloud infrastructure, and enterprise networks. Security professionals from around the world registered to attend and experience firsthand the latest in cybersecurity research, developments, and trends as the threat landscape continues to evolve beyond traditional detection methods.
New for 2025, the Black Hat Startup Spotlight Competition launched for the first time at SecTor. The four finalists, Legion Security, Nexodata Inc., SelfHack AI, and ShadowHQ, all presented innovative approaches to persistent security challenges. The winner, Legion Security, will advance to represent SecTor at the Global Startup Spotlight Competition during Black Hat USA 2026.
This year's event featured three full-day Summits on September 30: the tenth annual SecTor Executive Summit for security leaders shaping cybersecurity strategy, the tenth annual Cloud Security Summit addressing complex cloud security challenges, and the second annual AI Summit exploring emerging threats and innovative AI solutions.
Key themes from Summit Day included:
- Systemic Risk Management & Quantum-Ready Security Transformation: Sessions during the Executive Summit covered how enterprise cybersecurity is evolving from reactive threat response to proactive governance frameworks integrating quantum-resistant technologies and supply chain trust architectures.
- AI-Driven Security Operations & Reality-Based Cloud Security: Discussions within the Cloud Security Summit highlighted how organizations are moving from reactive to predictive security models using AI and machine learning, while also focusing on measurable outcomes rather than tool proliferation.
- AI Security Evolution & Governance Maturity: Insights from the AI Summit shared how organizations are shifting from AI hype to practical implementation while developing governance frameworks that address regulatory compliance and manage AI as both a security enabler and threat vector.

Confronting Emerging Threats
This year's program featured more than 45 technical Briefings revealing newly discovered vulnerabilities and defense techniques. The opening Keynote, Cristin Flynn Goodwin, Founder of Advanced Cyber Law, addressed how and why traditional cybersecurity frameworks aren't prepared for Agentic AI, while the Day 2 Keynote, HD Moore, Founder at runZero, examined cybersecurity rules from the past 20 years to reveal which ones still matter, which ones have failed us, and what new rules we'll need to survive the future.

Innovation Against Adversaries
The Business Hall transformed into a vibrant exhibition space with more than 150 cybersecurity providers demonstrating their cutting-edge technology. Within the Business Hall, Black Hat Arsenal featured 40 in-person tool demos and six labs, providing attendees hands-on experience with the latest open-source tools and products.

Building Resilient Security Communities
The Community Program facilitated critical conversations around shared cybersecurity challenges, creating connections that extend beyond the conference. SecTor's commitment to developing future security talent was highlighted through 29 scholarships awarded to emerging professionals, complementing Black Hat's ongoing Student and Veteran Scholarship initiatives.
